The concerted effort by multiple challengers to corner the veteran Democrat appeared to backfire, as Becerra maintained a composed, almost buoyant, demeanor throughout the heated exchanges.
The debate, held at the California State University, Sacramento campus, saw Republican contenders, State Senator Michael Thompson and businesswoman Sarah Chen, repeatedly pivot their critiques toward Becerra. Their strategy seemingly aimed to brand him as out of touch with average Californians and too closely aligned with progressive national policies. Themes of economic policy, public safety, and state regulations dominated the offensive.
Instead of retreating under pressure, Becerra adopted an assertive stance, often interjecting with practiced ease and redirecting the conversation to his legislative record and vision for the state.
