PORTLAND — One individual is dead following a chaotic incident early Tuesday morning when a vehicle crashed into a prominent Portland athletic club, leading authorities to discover what they described as an “explosive device” at the scene.
Emergency responders converged on the Multnomah Athletic Club on Southwest Salmon Street shortly after 3 a.m. after reports of a vehicle careening into the building. The Portland Police Bureau confirmed the fatality, though the identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending family notification.
The initial crash prompted a significant emergency response, including fire and medical personnel. However, the situation escalated dramatically when first responders conducting a preliminary assessment of the damaged vehicle and immediate area identified suspicious materials.
Law enforcement officials, including specialized bomb squads, were immediately called to the scene. Subsequent analysis confirmed the presence of an explosive device, leading to a wider perimeter lockdown and the evacuation of nearby properties.
FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents have joined the Portland Police Bureau in what is now a multi-agency investigation. Officials have yet to clarify whether the deceased individual was the driver of the vehicle or a pedestrian.
Investigators are meticulously examining the crash site and the discovered device, attempting to piece together the sequence of events and the motivations behind the incident. The immediate area around the Portland athletic club remains cordoned off, causing significant disruption to morning commutes.
“This is an active and complex investigation,” stated Portland Police Chief Mike Marsh during a brief press conference outside the secured perimeter. “We are working closely with federal partners to ensure public safety and determine the full scope of this incident.”
Chief Marsh urged the public to avoid the area and report any suspicious activity. He emphasized that the investigation is in its nascent stages and no further details regarding potential suspects or a motive can be released at this time.
Bomb disposal technicians worked for several hours to secure or neutralize the device. While officials have not confirmed the devices nature, sources close to the investigation indicated it appeared to be an improvised explosive device.
