MONTGOMERY — A 78-year-old French widow, Odette Lefevre, was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in Alabama on Tuesday after a 16-day detention that garnered national attention and fierce criticism from human rights advocates and legal experts.
Her release came following intense legal challenges mounted by her pro bono legal team and significant public pressure, which highlighted the plight of an elderly, ailing woman held under what many described as inhumane conditions for an expired tourist visa.
Lefevre, a permanent resident of France, had been visiting her daughter in Montgomery when her six-month tourist visa expired. She was detained by ICE agents during a routine check-in, a procedure her family claims she dutifully observed since becoming aware of her overstay.
