TAMPA — Human remains were discovered Wednesday morning in the waters of Tampa Bay, Florida, intensifying a week-long search for missing 20-year-old university student Sarah Jenkins, authorities confirmed. The significant development has prompted a massive forensic investigation as officials work to identify the remains and determine the circumstances surrounding the grim discovery.
The discovery was made by marine units from the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office around 9:30 a.m. near the Gandy Bridge, a location that had been part of an expansive search grid since Jenkins disappeared last Friday.
Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed reporters at a midday press conference, stating, “While we are hopeful this brings answers to a grieving family, we must proceed with caution. The identification process is critical and will take time.” He emphasized that no definitive link to Jenkins has been established, but the location and context make it a high-priority lead.
Sarah Jenkins, a sophomore at the University of South Florida, was last seen leaving a gathering with friends near the downtown Tampa waterfront. Her friends reported her missing when she failed to return to her dorm room or respond to calls and texts.
Her family, who traveled from Orlando following her disappearance, expressed their profound distress. “Every passing hour has been agony,” said Maria Jenkins, Sarahs mother, in a statement released through family spokesperson Mark Davis. “We pray for clarity and for Sarahs safe return.”
The initial search for Jenkins involved multiple agencies, including the Tampa Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and numerous volunteer groups. Divers, K9 units, and aerial drones had been deployed across various areas of the bay and its surrounding shorelines.
Forensic teams from the medical examiner's office were immediately dispatched to the scene after the discovery. The remains were carefully recovered and transported for a detailed examination, including DNA analysis and dental record comparison.
“The integrity of the evidence is paramount,” explained Dr. Evelyn Reed, Hillsborough County Chief Medical Examiner. “We are employing every available scientific method to provide a conclusive identification and insights into the cause of death.” She estimated the identification process could take several days to a week.
