VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo, in his first major teaching since assuming the papacy, today called for the global “disarmament” of artificial intelligence, warning that unchecked development poses a profound ethical threat to humanity and risks dehumanizing society. The pronouncement, delivered from the Vatican, outlines a comprehensive moral framework urging technologists, policymakers, and international bodies to prioritize human dignity over technological advancement.
The Pontiff emphasized that while AI offers immense potential for progress, its current trajectory lacks adequate moral safeguards. He asserted that the power of AI systems, if not guided by robust ethical principles, could lead to widespread societal disruption, reinforce biases, and erode the fundamental concept of human freedom and responsibility.
The teaching, formally titled “Instrumenta Humanitatis: On the Ethical Future of Artificial Intelligence,” elaborates on the need for a global consensus to regulate the design, deployment, and use of AI. Pope Leo argued that just as nations agree on the control of weapons, a similar urgency must be applied to intelligent machines capable of autonomous decision-making.
He specifically highlighted concerns about autonomous weapons systems, the proliferation of deepfakes, and AI algorithms that perpetuate discrimination. The Pope stated that these technologies, without proper ethical “disarmament,” could destabilize global peace and justice, creating divisions that would be difficult to overcome.
The concept of “disarmament” as articulated by Pope Leo does not imply halting AI innovation entirely, but rather redirecting its purpose. He urged a shift from AI designed for control or exploitation toward systems that enhance human capabilities, promote solidarity, and serve the common good.
The teaching also addressed the economic implications of AI, cautioning against systems that exacerbate inequality by displacing human labor without providing adequate social safety nets or opportunities for retraining. The Pope emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI benefits all segments of society, not just a select few.
Religious leaders and ethicists globally have largely praised Pope Leo's intervention, viewing it as a timely and necessary moral compass for an increasingly complex technological landscape.
